Years 1 and 2 - Key Stage 1

In Years 1 and 2 we are looking for pupils to continue to develop the self-confidence, self-control and self-motivation learned in Foundation.  We encourage good manners whilst promoting a learning environment where children will not be afraid to ask questions.  We want the children to share in and contribute to the school community by taking part in school activities and mixing with the older children in the Junior School. Small numbers and caring staff ensure that all pupils fulfil their potential and that pupils with academic ability and those with specific learning difficulties are all catered for according to their needs.  Pupils are encouraged to better themselves rather than competing with other pupils.

A structured timetable is followed with individual records being kept for each child under the guidance of qualified teachers and their assistants. Pupils follow the work outlined in the National Curriculum; this covers all Key Stage 1 work, resulting in the National Curriculm tests assessment at the end of Year 2. Topic work for Science, History and Geography take place alongside Art and Design, Craft, Drama, Games, Agility, Singing, French, Music and Movement which all form part of their timetable. ICT lessons takes place weekly in the computer suite in the Senior School, which is fitted with the latest SMART interactive white board and PC based software. Computers are available for daily use in all classrooms in the Junior building.

Circle time forms a part of our PSHE and Citizenship programme and children are encouraged to talk about their feelings. The children are encouraged to re-cycle and to think about the world around them.  During playtime pupils are encouraged to play together and 'take turn' with balls, hoops and skipping ropes or to use the climbing apparatus and swings, in a supervised environment (weather permitting). The playground is fully fenced in and all the doors have security pads fitted to them.

Infants are aiming for National Curriculum Levels of 2a and 3 at the end of Year 2 and move on to the Juniors with a good knowledge of number work, reading, writing and comprehension having been encouraged to think and act for themselves.
